Self Pity is not Your Friend

I used to give myself to self pity whenever I could.  Unfortunately I found out over the years that this self afflicted party was not very popular.  My wife, in particular, and I am fortunate for that discouraged me of it.  Eventually,  I saw the destructiveness of it...It blocks everything!
- It blocks time...more like it wastes time.  If you indulge in self pity for an hour you don't realize where that hour has gone until you literally wake up from it.
- It blocks progress...Your personal progress in life stops dead until you come to your senses
- It stops, of course, relationships...In some cases you find pushing everyone away from your mind.  "Leave me alone" you find yourself thinking and pretty soon in life you find yourself alone without a friend or a companion.

Yes, it blocks everything.  Can you think of more things it blocks in your life?

Self pity doesn't come on you all at once but gradually with one thoughts and then pretty soon...a flood of them and if you don't watch out...to thoughts of suicide.  You don't want to be there.  Too dangerous!  Go for a walk...Pray, read a book, play a game.  Just do something to distract yourself from these destructive thoughts.
If that's not enough call a friend, the Crisis Center in your country.  Do something!  Your life is precious, too precious to waste.  I know all about what I just talked to you about.  I have experienced it and I can tell you its terrible and humiliating.

Most of all, if you are taking medications for depression...Don't stop taking them, even if you feel they don't work.  Talk to your Doctor about it and he will help you.  I say stick to your medications even if you think you could feel much better. The medications you are taking right now are the best cure so far but who knows sometimes later they will find something better.  Yours meds are the best thing you have got so far.  Today, you are feeling better than you did yesterday.  Stick with it!!!!!

This following poem is one about discouragement.  Self pity and discouragement are closely connected.

 Discouragement

Bernard Demaere

Will you not rejoice, O my soul

In the midst of failures,

Shipwrecks and despondency,

Is there a way out of this?

Will darkness make room for light?

Will the clouds part from the sky?

O my soul, hear the words!

Let gloom be turned to joy,

Your hurts into healing,

For the Lord is nigh

To the contrite heart,

He will comfort you at night,

And carry you through the day,

You will yet praise Him,

In the midst of failures,

Shipwrecks and despondency.
