Addiction and Worry

Now as innocent as worry and anxiety are, they are destructive.  It's a form of mental illness and even a fixation on something you want to have control over but can't.
An addiction of any kind is a fixation.  I have been addicted for over 40 years and I can tell you it's a fixation.
A fixation or addiction needs to be distracted from and reprogrammed by changing values and quality of life.
The thought pattern has to be totally changed and renewed and this takes time.

Any addiction needs to be taken seriously in order to stop.  You want to stop smoking, alright, well as long as you treat it like a joke you will never start getting over it.  In every addiction you have to ask yourself simple questions like "Why do I want to quit?  The reason has to be important enough that you will want to change.  It's often an ethical related reason or a moral reason.

If you know someone who is addicted to anything just don't leave them on their own.  Encourage them on their journey to recovery, also thinking that you could be in their shoes and could have gone through the same thing yourself.

There is potential in anyone and the ability to quit any addiction they have.  Don't shun them from society just because you think their addiction is too "dirty."

We are all helpless human beings who need a friend.

To conclude, here is a poem about being in someone else's shoes:

Have You Been in my Shoes?

Bernard Demaere

Have you gone below?

To the depth of my soul,

And felt the sorrow,

And seen the tears,

The knives of bitterness,

Teasing the fire of anger.

Have you been below?

The storms of life,

And fears calling,

Suicidal thoughts,

Shooting their poison,

In the depth of my mind,

Have you felt below?

My skin and bones,

The agony of my soul,

The trouble, not present,

But that is always there,

Purely, my imagination.

So be silent,

You strangers of my soul,

Who falsely interpret,

Everything about me,

Looking from a distance,

But for how long?

Have you been in my shoes?

In my soul down below?
